Artist Statement
Marco Yuen (b. 2002-) ’s multidisciplinary practice speaks in the homesick tongues of the diaspora community, reflecting his Hong Kong roots by narrating underrepresented cultural bodies on foreign soils, through performative and ritualistic works that challenges established iconography.
Yuen believes that curated performances hold the anarchic power to grant political voices to marginalised groups, he is compelled to espouse the migrant society and those who long to connect with their origin. No individuality or cultural identity should be repressed by legality or restriction of language.
Yuen’s interest in performing happenings sparked after the study of Anthony Howell’s The Analysis of Performance Art. This was a catalyst for Yuen’s breakthrough endurance performance piece ‘Unwritten Embrace Falling Tree Fallen Free (2024-2026)’. Enabling his focus upon the participatory roles of ‘the audience’ in performances; the codependent nature of peaceful stillness alongside disquiet violence; and the performativity in deconstructing and reforming pre-existing iconography.
